A while ago now Flameeyes (a fellow Gentoo Dev) put significant effort into jruby to bring them up to a standard where we could start supporting jruby. I must thank him for that, but sadly he never got the unit tests to run. Since then I have jumped in and been semi-maintaining it and have spent a significant amount of time attempting to get those unit tests working. Sadly I have come to realise why flameeyes didn't get them working in the first place.

This has been very frustrating as I have a goal in mind for jruby. It won't be easy but I think it would be extremely worthwhile.

So what is this goal?

To bring jruby up to a standard where it can be confidently used as the system ruby implementation on Gentoo linux.

Quiet literally I want the 100% java implementation of the ruby language to be 100% compatible with the ruby gems/apps Gentoo packages. Not only does this mean with running them, but their unit tests must pass too :) I not going to bog you down with the details of how we will achieve that but if your interested flameeyes blog posts of the subject are always an interesting read. I may also, at a later date, write about the in depths of how we package java and jruby.

Now I already know that I don't have the time to accomplish this. So I am asking for volunteers to help maintain jruby on Gentoo. Initially we need to start playing with the jruby build system and its unit tests so they pass within gentoo.

If you are interested then I would love to here from you.
